The modern way to tan should leave nothing to chance. The emphasis is on pleasurable enjoyment of tanning, but taking into account the differences of skin type. The positive effects of UV light on our bodies are well documented, but many of us are unaware of the important part that UV light rays play in our lives. There is little doubt that carefully controlled exposure to UV light is essential to our health- but also benefits us in other ways:
- Pre-holiday tanning greatly reduces the risk of burning, setting up the skin, allowing you to go into the sun sooner for longer.
- Post-holiday tanning prolongs your tan leaving you looking and feeling better all year around.
- Tanning promotes relaxation and reduces stress.
- UV light stimulates the production of Vitamin D3, essential in our bodies for bones to absorb calcium and prevent osteoporosis.
- It counteracts the 'winter blues' or the effects of S.A.D. (Seasonal Adjustment Disorder).
- It's proven by dermatologists to effectively treat skin conditions such as Acne, Psoriasis and Eczema.
- It also increases resistance to infection and viral diseases.
There are three types of UV light: A, B and C. Human beings have evolved different skin types to cope with living in different UV climates. Nearer the equator, the UV climate is very much harsher than, in Scotland or Scandinavia. Not everyone's skin is the same. We know simply by looking at African and Asian skin that is different from European skin, but even within European skin there are four different skin types.
Your skin type is something you are born with. Skin type 1, of Viking and Celtic origin, is the fairest skin and poorly adapted to too much sunlight. Persons with skin type I are not allowed to use sunbeds and should not sunbathe to get a tan. Fifteen minutes of sun on hands and face, three times a week, is all they need to get the benefit of the sun, without any of the adverse effects.
Skin type is often genetically linked to hair and eye colour, and skin type 1 persons often have red hair, green eyes and lots of freckles, but not always. The best way to tell if you skin type 1 is how your skin reacts to sunlight: if you always burn in the sun then you skin type 1. Skin type 2 would be light skinned European. Skin type 3 would be dark skinned European. Skin type 4, Mediterranean and Skin type 5 middle eastern/African/Asian.

DAYLIGHT ROBBERY!
The UK’s public health policy towards sunlight has come under attack in a new report by Oliver Gillie BSc PhD. This comprehensive 47 page document should revolutionise people’s perceptions regarding UV light.
According to Gillie, the advice in the government’s SunSmart campaign is out of date and completely unsuitable for our climate. ‘Sunburn should be avoided for obvious reasons but there is no good scientific reason to avoid tanning’ Oliver Gillie, BSc, PhD.
This report is excellent news for the tanning industry as all too often we are subjected to sensationalist material. The Professional Tanning Studio Group has long championed the benefits of safe tanning. We know that we need UV light in our lives and inform our clients about the health benefits of using sunbeds to clear skin conditions, stimulate Vitamin D and of the links that tanning has against protection from melanoma and prostate cancers. Our approach to tanning and the combination of sunbeds means there is allways a bed to suit any skin type. Tanning is the fastest growing sector in the beauty industry.
If it was bad for youwe wouldn’t be expanding. Like any business we experience peaks and troughs but the summer season ’03 was particularly affected by negative press stories. I think that the debate about sunbeds lost all perspective around that time because it’s clear from these reports that the benefits of tanning certainly outweigh any risk and I quote from Olivers article ‘Sunburn should be avoided for obvious reasons but there is no good (scientific) reason to avoid tanning’ In spite of this excellent report I’m sure some people will still remain sceptical about using sunbeds (will they still sunbathe?) so for those people we have installed the Mystic Spray Tan.
It’s an automated booth that requires no therapist so it’s a totally private treatment.
The session takes less than 60 seconds and results are amazing - lasting between
5-7 days. The only risk is that you might want one every week!!
